Sarah Bulman

Superyacht Stewardess

Launched her 2019 career in superyacht hospitality

As the superyacht industry continues to expand year on year, so does the demand for exceptionally well-trained interior crew. UKSA’s Superyacht Interior Foundation course delivers all the qualifications, practical skills, industry guidance, knowledge and support required by stewards and stewardesses at the beginning of their careers in this luxury industry.

So what lead you towards a career as a superyacht stewardess?

Sarah Bulman’s UKSA’s journey began when college wasn’t working out and a passion for teaching took over. After a year at college she received for a bursary from Noel Lister to take our Watersports Instructor Training course,  she then received further funding from Milo Hanlon to take our Watersports Instructor Development course. With a background in dance, she was attracted by the glamour of the superyacht lifestyle and decided to study for the Superyacht Interior Foundation course. Sarah shares her story:

Why is UKSA the perfect training partner if wanting a role in the superyacht industry?

“I’ve always wanted to sail and I’m the type of person that is always moving around, so when I needed a change from teaching watersports, the Superyacht Interior course seemed like the ideal next step. You learn a great deal in a very short time at UKSA and you mature very quickly. The superyacht industry appeals to me because I’ll be getting paid to travel in a job where every day is different – right now I’m being trained for active employment, which is very different to studying in college. I really feel I’m where I’m supposed to be.”

What have you learnt so far on UKSA’s superyacht hospitality course?

“On the Interior course so far we’ve covered housekeeping, laundry, wine appreciation and flower arranging, in which I surprised myself! Vanessa Hodgson is an amazing teacher – she takes time to know everyone individually and understands exactly what makes each person tick. She’s a massive inspiration to all of us. The best bit of the course is definitely the dynamic of our group – we all watch out for each other and are forming friendships for life.”

What type of boat would you like to work on once you graduate?

“I’ve already applied for some jobs through crew agencies so when I finish this course I will hopefully have something lined up. Ideally, I’ll spend the next season in the Mediterranean and then the winter in the Caribbean. I’d like to start my career on a small boat with perhaps 10-20 crew, and I intend to learn as much as I can so I can pass my skills on to others later. I would say to people who want to do this course that it’s only three weeks which is scary, but it’s absolutely worth it.”
