Children on the IW will directly benefit from Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week this year thanks to UKSA. The proceeds will be used to get every Year 6 child a session on the water.
To help the fundraising campaign, we have drafted a whole schedule of events and most of them centre on getting the general public involved.
Here’s how to get involved:
Come and say hello! During Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, we will have a marquee where members of the public are welcome to come and say hello. Find out more about the charity that’s right on your doorstep!
Sail for a fiver! Impress all your friends when you tell them you’ve been out sailing this Cowes Week. For a suggested donation of just £5, Try Sailing with UKSA. We will have three keelboats regularly setting out from Cowes Yacht Haven and you can simply jump onboard to view the racing action and learn the ropes. It’s an experience not to be missed! The minimum age is six years old (must be accompanied) and over tens can go unaccompanied. No pre-booking, just turn up and be timetabled. Sailing daily from Sunday, Aug 3 to Friday, Aug 8, from 9.30am to 6pm, with the last sail going out at around 5pm. Each trip lasts approximately one hour. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet: we will provide wet weather gear and lifejackets.
Sail a Gutter Boat! We are bringing gutter boat racing to our marquee at Cowes Yacht Haven. It’s shore-side miniature racing and anyone can play this wacky sport by simply blowing little boats along gutters – challenging your opposition to see who completes the course first. Make your very own gutter boat using your own choice of materials and bring it along to race. The only specification is that the boat must fit within the dimensions of an A5 piece of paper, to fit in the guttering. A Top Gear style scoreboard will keep a record of the champions, and readymade gutter boats will also be provided to charter for impromptu racing. There is a suggested donation of £2. This event will be running daily from 10am.
Look out for Her Royal Highness! HRH The Princess Royal, UKSA’s Patron, and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, will be racing on the UKSA yachts on Tuesday, August 5. In fact, it is thought they will be racing against each other! So keep your eyes peeled and look out for some very competitive sailing that day! The Royal guests will be joining UKSA’s young ambassadors and invited guests onboard.
Send your boss up a mast! This is something a bit different. Head down to Cowes Yacht Haven (from 5.30pm on Sunday, Aug 3, Monday Aug 4 and Tuesday Aug 5) to watch the Boss Up A Mast spectacle. We will moor our ocean-going Farr in this prominent location and harness up some top executives, sending them 100ft up the mast! Those brave enough to have taken on the challenge will have to take a selfie from the top and urge their friends and contacts to pledge some money to UKSA. Can they talk the talk while stranded at dizzy heights surrounded by spectators?
Why not Master the Mast yourself? In return for a small donation, you can climb the mast of the iconic Gipsy Moth IV, which will be moored in the Yacht Haven each day from 11.30am to 2pm. You’ll be locked into a harness and you can climb up to get one of the best views of the regatta!
Donate! Here’s how…. Monies raised through UKSA being official charity will go towards getting Island children out on the water. If you like what they do throughout Cowes Week, you can make a donation on www.justgiving.com/cowesweek14
