From Sea Cadet to Superyacht Cadet
The UKSA Superyacht Cadetship is a structured programme which combines high-quality training and mentoring, and offers a practical alternative to university study. Cadets come from a variety of backgrounds; some were Sea Cadets or Scouts and some are already competitive sailors. What characterises all successful cadets, however, is the drive and determination to succeed within the elite superyacht industry.
Max Thomlinson, a Phase One cadet, was a Sea Cadet for five years, during which he competed and won in a number of national rowing and sailing competitions. He found out about the UKSA Cadetship on a stand at a Sea Cadet regatta and after a year at college, he joined us.
Max shares his story:
“Before joining UKSA I had already sailed in the Round the Island Race and in dinghy racing I had reached national level three times. On my first seaphase at UKSA we sailed around the Solent in beautiful weather, learning about each crewing position, and one day we saw a US Nimitz-class Aircraft Carrier. Each night we stayed at a different marina. Every day at UKSA has its own challenges and joys which is why I love being here.
One of the best things for me so far was the first 60-mile passage when we sailed to France and Portland, where we saw a porpoise. I also enjoyed the challenges of firefighting – moving through smoke and attacking a fire – I now have huge respect for firefighters. Everyone on my course is so similar to me and I find it really easy to be myself as I’m surrounded by people who think the same way.
I would like my first job to be on a 40-60 metre sailing vessel, where I can learn and increase my knowledge. In the long run I hope to reach the level of Captain – I want to use this Cadetship course to rocket me into a lifelong career.
“If I was to advise anyone about the Cadetship, I would say that if you think there’s no alternative to university, definitely check out some of the courses at UKSA.”
