Superyacht Hospitality – meet the expert: Vanessa Hodgson
Vanessa is our Superyacht Hospitality Training course instructor (pictured on the left)
Vanessa originally got into yachting, and then super yachting, through event planning. She found that her work within these industries paid off her university fees and she really enjoyed it. She hosted yachts during Skandia Life Cowes Week and went on to work for a yacht charter company in Lymington.
This led her to run a 21m boat, which was a support boat to a larger 48m one and spent over three years based in Lebanon and the Mediterranean. From here she went onto a 35m yacht refit and then helped with the build of a 54m through the same owner.
After having her son she got involved with more of a shoreside activity – writing the first hospitality course at UKSA, in April 2006. The course was to be one of the first ever stew courses around, and it proved an in-depth course with lots of topics relevant to what the industry was crying out for.
Since then, the superyacht industry has experienced massive growth and a boom in the number of yachts out there. The crews are bigger now and there is a need for more professionalism and for qualifications.
As well as still tutoring at UKSA, Vanessa also runs a highly successful eponymous company dealing in training, recruitment, supplies and consultancy within the superyacht world.
