ECDIS Training

The aim of the course is to train bridge watchkeeping officers and other interested personnel in the safe and efficient use of ECDIS.

About the Course

The ECDIS course is a component module of several MCA Deck Officer training certifications. The course will cover the general principles of operation of an Electronic Chart System and the regulations for the operation and will include time spent on basic software learning the methods of setting up, updating, loading new charts and software.

Two days will be spent learning the basic operation before moving on to passage planning and performing a series of tasks on the ship simulator to fully understand navigating using Electronic Charts.

Training towards:

Basic knowledge of computers.

Students will be continuously assessed and will have to complete all tasks successfully to be issued with certification. It is a condition that candidates have 100% attendance on the course.

If a candidate does not undertake the required hours, he/she should successfully complete the exercises not attended before a certificate is issued.

ECDIS is now a mandatory requirement for Officer of the Watch (Yachts less than 3000gt), Chief Mate (Yachts less than 3000gt) and Master (Yachts less than 500gt and 3000gt).

If you are applying for a Master Code Vessel, less than 200gt, Certificate of Competency and do not complete an MCA-approved ECDIS course you will receive the following limitation: “From the 1st January 2017 this certificate is not valid for service on ships fitted with ECDIS.”

The course complies with the IMO model course 1.27 and the MNTB guidelines for generic ECDIS training.
