Work towards your Chief Mate Certificate of Competency

The Chief Mate is the second in command. As a Chief Mate, talented individuals can expect to progress quickly, and receive good levels of pay, all while working in some of the world’s most stunning locations.

Why Chief Mate (Yachts <3000gt)?

The Chief Mate (Yachts <3000gt) Certificate of Competency (CoC) is an endorsement of the Officer of the Watch (Yachts <3000gt) CoC.

This qualification demonstrates you have the knowledge, skills and experience to work as a Chief Mate.

Before you can apply you must complete a number of MCA Ancillary courses.

Before you can apply for the Chief Mate (Yachts <3000gt) CoC, you must complete the following MCA Ancillary courses:

  • Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/3)
  • Proficiency in Medical First Aid (STCW A-VI/4-1)
  • Human Element, Leadership and Management (Management Level)
  • Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)

You must also meet the following entry requirements:

Please Note: The above entry requirements are not required to attend the training courses for Chief Mate (Yachts less than 3000gt), however are required to apply for your Notice of Eligibility (NoE) to obtain the endorsement. Full details can be found on the MCA Oral Examination Form MSF 4343.
