Improving your dinghy skills

Dinghy sailing is a fun, exhilarating and rewarding sport that will allow you to enjoy the freedom and excitement of sailing, in a safe and secure environment.

About the Course

If you’re aged 8-15 and you’ve already completed your RYA Youth Stage 2 or the Dinghy Start course, this course will allow you to get back out on the water and improve your skills.

You’ll build on your existing skills and knowledge, improve your sailing techniques and manoeuvres, and develop an understanding of safety at sea, including man overboard recovery, rules of the road and meteorology.

You’ll be supervised by our experienced and safeguard trained watersports instructor team throughout the course. If you’re on a residential course, you’ll also have access to your own dedicated kids’ area and evening activities programme – so you’ll be able to make friends and have plenty of fun in the process!

RYA Youth Stage 1 and 2

If the participant meets the pre-requites for this course, but have not sailed within 6 months of their previous course, please be aware that a knowledge and skill gap may occur which could result in incompletion of the RYA stages advertised being signed off.

Please note that in the case where not all sections of a previous level have been met, our chief instructor / watersports manager will review on a case-by-case basis as to whether they feel that the child is ready for the next level, and that they will have the opportunity to complete previous missed sections, without it disrupting the rest of the group.

The syllabus is taught with a ratio of (6:1) students to instructor and covers the following:

RYA Youth Stage 3

  • Rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. Equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme

RYA Youth Stage 4

  • Sail a double handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat. (optional if Stage 3 was taken in a double-hander)
