India Joseph-Meddle

“The course was great fun, and an eye-opener into how the industry works. Only a week after the course I was offered a stewardess/diver position on a scuba diving liveaboard in the Bahamas.”

There are many pathways to progression in the Superyacht Industry, for India entering the industry as a Stewardess was just the first step to becoming a Second Officer on an 80m superyacht.

India has spent her life around water, starting scuba diving at the age of 8 and competing as a springboard diver for years. Whilst at college she took on some part-time work as a lifeguard, swim teacher and dive coach but as soon as India left college she enrolled on UKSA’s Superyacht Steward(ess) training course.

“The course was great fun, and an eye-opener into how the industry works. Only a week after the course I was offered a stewardess/diver position on a scuba diving liveaboard in the Bahamas.”

“Deciding that I wanted to take on a role on a Superyacht including more work on deck I secured a role as a Deckhand as the next step in my career.” Whilst on charter, India was successful in obtaining a scholarship to complete her Officer of the Watch <3000GT modules which she was thrilled to take on, passing the qualification in March 2024.

India is currently working as a Second Officer on a 80m Superyacht, “A normal day for me would involve waking up and checking the decks to ensure that they are ready for the day ahead, followed by some work in the bridge such as safety checks, chart updates and GMDSS checks. Once this is done I’ll head outside and either do some tender driving, watersports with the guests or lend a hand on deck.”

“To think of my favourite memory is a tricky one! I really enjoy my job and have had countless great memories over the years. Some stand out moments though would be getting to see the Arctic, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica whilst onboard an Ice-Breaker yacht, it was surreal.”

We asked India what her plans for the next step in her career was to which she explained, “I will be returning to UKSA to complete my Chief Mate modules in January 2025, until then I am enjoying a break from studying for my OOW modules.”

We can’t wait to welcome India back to UKSA!
