Joy Cameron
“I had the chance to network and meet some amazing people, crucial for making future contacts. I also got to explore new places and made friends for life.”
Upon finishing her A Levels, Joy was searching online for Deckhand Courses and in September 2023 found UKSA’s Superyacht Deckhand training. A year since graduating, Joy shares her experience of working on 31m motoryacht in the Mediterranean.
“UKSA caught my attention when searching for courses, the fact they provide food and accommodation made things so much easier. They also offered Open Days which was great to ask questions and see the site, and any queries I had were answered quickly and clearly. I felt very confident in choosing UKSA.” Joy explained as she looked back at her time spent training at UKSA.
“One of the highlights of the course for me was the STCW, it was a really fun way to learn essential safety skills. It was also exciting to get hands-on experience with operating a tender and jet skis.”
Upon graduating, finding the perfect job didn’t happen instantly but Joy explained that it was ‘worth the wait’, “I secured a position on a 31m motor yacht and learned so much during my first season. I had the chance to network and meet some amazing people, crucial for making future contacts. I also got to explore new places and made friends for life.”
“The job might seem easy from the outside but it’s hard work, you need to have a good attitude and be willing to put in the effort to succeed.” Joy advised, before going on to explain what a typical day looks like for her. “The morning is spent preparing for the day with wash downs, stocking the bar and drinks and checking inventory, setting up for meals and serving. The afternoon may see me inflating water toys and taking out the tender, jet skis and paddleboards, or watering and buying flowers and planning themes for dinner.”
When asked about what her plans are for the future, Joy explained “Over the winter I am thinking of doing my divemaster and a mixology course. I am thinking of moving towards becoming a stewardess and would love to work my way up to Chief Stew through the years.” That is one of the joys of entering the maritime industry, the variety of paths your training can take you and roles you could take on. We are sure Joy will make a great Chief Stew and can’t wait to see more of her journey there!
