RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate FAQs
What does VHF stand for in marine?
VHF stands for Very High Frequency. In marine contexts, it usually refers to the radio frequencies between 156 and 174 MHz, which are used for short-range communication between ships, or between ships and shore stations.
What is VHF vs UHF in Marine?
VHF (Very High Frequency):
- Operates between 156 and 174 MHz
- Ideal for short-range communication in marine environments due to its ability to penetrate saltwater and its allocation within the Maritime Mobile Service.
UHF (Ultra High Frequency):
- Operates roughly between 300 and 3000 MHz
- UHF signals can penetrate obstacles more effectively than VHF signals, making them more common in urban environments. However, in marine settings, UHF is not commonly used.
Do I need a VHF marine radio licence?
Yes. In the United Kingdom, both the person using the radio and the radio equipment itself must be licensed.
What is the range of VHF marine radio?
VHF radios typically have a transmit power limit of 25 watts, giving them a potential range of up to about 100 km under good conditions. However, the actual distance can be more or less depending on:
- Antenna height (taller antennas increase range).
- Local geography or obstacles (land masses or large structures can block signals).
- Weather conditions.
