Competent Crew course overview
An introduction for beginners who want to become active and useful crew members. The course introduces the fundamentals of sailing a moderate-size cruising yacht.
About the course
By the end of the course you will have the confidence and ability to keep a lookout, handle sails, steer, row a dinghy and assist in all other day-to-day activities.
During the course you will cover approximately 100 miles, including four night hours on watch.
Want to complete the course over three weekends?
As well as the consecutive 5 day RYA Competent Crew course, we also offer the option of taking this course over three weekends by attending three RYA Start Yachting courses. Each weekend includes one night on-board and food.
If you decide to take the RYA Competent Crew course over three weekends, we recommend that you complete all three training weekends within a period of six months.
Includes all food and accommodation.

Minimum age: 12
Qualifications
By the end of this course you will have sufficient knowledge and skill to be a useful and able crew member on any sailing yacht. The RYA Competent Crew course is great fun and not surprisingly it’s very popular!
Successful candidates are awarded the RYA Competent Crew course completion certificate at the end of the course.

The RYA Competent crew syllabus is taught in a ratio of (5:1) students to instructor and covers the following:

After the course you will be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines.
