Our commitment to sustainability

We are passionate about the sea, it sits at the heart of everything we do to deliver positive impact on all the young people who pass through our doors. Ocean health and sustainability are now top of the agenda, and we’ve partnered with Final Straw Solent in a bid to increase awareness of ocean health and the devastating impact plastic pollution has on our seas.

Teaching sustainability and ocean health

Young people training at UKSA will learn about sustainability and ocean health thanks to presentations on plastic pollution and planned activities during all training courses. Each student will learn why it is essential to protect the oceans and what key steps can be taken to actively minimise pollution. It is estimated that in 2020 6000 young people will be a part of the initiative at the Isle of Wight based centre.

We practice what we preach

We have substantially reduced single use plastics, replacing plastic cups and sandwich containers with compostable and reusable packaging. We also have a crisp packet recycling scheme in association with TerraCycle UK. In December 2018, we installed a Seabin on a floating dock in the UKSA marina, the first on Isle of Wight shores which collects an estimated 1.5kg of floating debris per day. We are helping to produce the future generation of sailors and this is a huge step forwards to ensuring we can be confident that our oceans, coasts and waterways will be in safe hands.

Our Commitment
