Start your engineering career on Small Vessels or on Superyachts

This 70 hour course provides students with basic theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience with workshop related activities to enable you meet the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) towards the Engineer Officer of the Watch Small Vessel Certificate of Competency.

The certification is for new and experienced crew who wish to move into the small vessel environment as engineers. A Certificate of Competency (CoC) gained through this route will be transferable between the following industries:

  • Superyachts
  • Tugs
  • Workboats
  • Standby
  • Seismic survey
  • Oceanographic research vessels
  • Government patrol vessels
  • Fishing vessels

About Small Vessel Engineering Workshop Skills

The aim of this course is to familiarise you with common workshop practices and repair methods.  We teach you the tools to use and the safe methods and procedures to use these tools and repair equipment.

At the end of this course you will have the basic knowledge of how to carry out repairs and be confident in procedures ensuring correct methods have been employed.

The course also aims to give the basic training to the engineer officers who want to pursue a career on “Small Vessels” (Fishing Vessels, Yachts, Tugs, Workboats, Standby, Seismic Survey, Oceanographic Research Vessels and Government Patrol Vessels). The necessary training outlines the certification structure and training requirements. It also explains the regulatory requirements regarding the implementation of intended training elements, as may be applicable.

Prerequisites

Marine Engineers  must be physically fit and able. You must be energetic and enthusiastic with an ability to work to a high standard in all tasks.

Candidates must have completed AEC I and II prior to commencing the Workshop Skills Training Course.

All seafarers must have an ENG1 seafarer medical fitness certificate to work at sea (click here for more details).

Whilst it’s not essential to hold your ENG1 to complete your training with UKSA, it is required to hold this to secure work in the industry. For this reason, we recommend all students gain their ENG1 before they attend training.
